Man receives 3rd life sentence in crime spree though 4 Dallas area cities

January 31, 2008

A 28-year-old man was sentenced to life in prison Wednesday for a one-night, four-city crime spree that prosecutors say included aggravated kidnapping and sexual assaults. The same jury that gave Reginald Newton a life sentence convicted him of aggravated robbery. Mr. Newton was sentenced last year to two life sentences and a 90-year sentence for other incidents from that same night in December 2006. And he has four cases pending from that night.

Dallas County prosecutors Liz Jackson and Taly Haffar told jurors that Mr. Newton earned his life sentence and that his criminal history showed they needed to protect society from him. According to testimony from earlier proceedings, Mr. Newton used a serrated knife with a 9-inch blade to stalk and assault the women. Judge Mike Snipes stacked Wednesday's life sentence on top of the previous sentences at the request of Ms. Jackson.
